Transform Abafrica: Pioneering Organic Solutions for Soil Conservation

Background and Initial Challenges

Balam Twinamatsiko’s journey began in 2018 as a university graduate stepping into the role of an agronomist in Kigezi. He quickly identified key issues: farmers struggled with soil fertility, pest infestations, and limited access to quality fertilizers and pesticides. These challenges led to poor yields, especially for pepper farmers who lacked alternative markets and reliable inputs. Recognizing an opportunity, Balam launched Transform Abafrica Products Limited in 2019, specializing in organic fertilizers and pesticides derived from local plant materials like tobacco, garlic, and peppers.

HortiMAP’s Role in Growth and Market Expansion

Balam’s engagement  as an agronomist with one of HortiMAP’s beneficiaries in 2022  opened new avenues for his enterprise. He started participating in farmer training sessions and awareness campaigns, where he learned to promote his products and educate farmers on their proper use. The partnership culminated in a catalytic grant that enabled Transform Abafrica to acquire machinery, a delivery truck, and conduct efficacy tests for certification by the Ministry of Agriculture. This certification has been instrumental in expanding their reach: the company now supplies to 98 input dealers nationwide, with a production increase from 35,000 to 96,000 liters per season. In a single cycle, they sold 62,000 liters to over 1,200 farmers directly and via dealers.

Future Strategies for Sustainable Growth

With rising demand, Transform Abafrica is investing in digital tracking to monitor stock levels with distributors, ensuring timely deliveries. Plans are underway to hire additional agronomists to provide comprehensive pre- and post-sale support. The company aims to increase input dealers to 210 from the current 98 and further boost production to 100,000 liters per season, maintaining their commitment to sustainable, organic farming solutions.

Transform Abafrica’s story shows that through strategic partnerships, Ugandan farmers can increasingly gain access to innovative inputs, knowledge, and markets. such collaborations can transform traditional farming into climate-smart, profitable ventures—empowering farmers, creating jobs, and fostering long-term sustainability across Uganda’s agricultural landscape.
