Phiona Namuyaba, a 34-year-old single mother of four children, is a resilient horticulture vendor based in Nabitalo Market, Namulonge zone, Wakiso district. Her journey began with humble origins, with a desire to cut down household vegetable expenses and encouraged by savings from casual labor. Today, Phiona has transformed her small business into a thriving enterprise.
Phiona starts her day by preparing her youngest daughter for daycare before heading to her stall. She carefully organizes her space, cleans her produce, and reviews her records for reordering stock and tracking transactions. Her story is one of perseverance, growth, and hope—a testament to what determination and support can achieve.
Overcoming Obstacles
Before joining HortiMAP in 2022, Phiona faced numerous hurdles. Limited capital, inadequate knowledge about business management, and unreliable suppliers made her struggle to maintain a steady income. Her initial efforts, though driven by determination, faded due to inconsistent supply and poor business practices.besides she was selling onions, tomatoes and paw paws only. Despite her mother’s skepticism, Phiona persisted, transforming her small fruit and vegetable stall into a stall of multiple fresh produce including watermentons, avocado carrots, oranges, pineapples, onions, tomatoes and paw paws .
Her persistence paid off as she expanded from a single stall to three, sourcing produce from Gayaza main market and farmers in surrounding villages like Busukuma, Zirobwe, Kiwenda, and Wobutungulu. Through her engagement with HortiMAP, her sales and revenues increased, enabling her to better support her family and contribute to community development. Her dedication exemplifies resilience in the face of adversity.
Empowering Through Knowledge
TechnoServe’s HortiMAP project was the turning point in Phiona’s business journey. Through the projects targeted trainings, mentorship, and linkages, she gained vital skills in business management, merchandising techniques, building strong relationships with suppliers, food safety and hygiene practices, effective record-keeping, and vendor cooperation. Phiona built connections with reliable suppliers from nearby markets such as Kalerwe and Gayaza, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce. Financial linkages with microfinance institutions like Pride Microfinance and BRAC provided her with the capital needed for expansion. These interventions laid the foundation for her remarkable transformation, helping her build a more sustainable and profitable business.Phiona gained access to market connections, ultimately increasing her sales and revenues from UGX 50,000 profits per week to UGX 90,000 per week as profits.

With new skills and confidence, Phiona’s business experienced a dramatic transformation. Her sales soared, from UGX 100,000 to UGX 400,000 per week and vendor relationships improved. Customers now trust her more due to her adherence to food safety standards and improved hygiene practices. Her meticulous record-keeping helped her make informed decisions, leading to increased revenues.
Encouraged by her progress, Phiona dreams of expanding further—adding another stall, increasing her purchases from local farmers, and strengthening vendor cooperation.
