At 24 years old, he was a senior four drop-out struggling with unemployment while trying to support his wife and their four-month-old child. The pressure to provide for his family weighed heavily on him, and he often felt trapped by his circumstances, unable to meet his basic needs.

A New Opportunity

Having been inspired by his peers who benefited from the Strengthening Rural Youth Development Through Enterprise (STRYDE) training, Brian participated in the training to improve his self-awareness and business management skills. STRYDE is a curriculum under the VINES project led by Catholic Relief Services and supported by a consortium that includes TechnoServe. Brian felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination following the three-month training on entrepreneurship, business management, self-awareness, record-keeping, budgeting, and savings.

In July 2022, with the support of TechnoServe, Brian ventured into vanilla growing. He planted 60 vanilla vines, and since then, he has increased the number of vanilla plants. However, the fluctuating vanilla prices threatened the financial prospects of his venture. With this realization, and with the help of TechnoServe, he undertook horticulture as a means of crop diversification. He received a sachet containing 1,000 tomato seeds that he cultivated on additional land.

A Bountiful Harvest

Brian proved to be resourceful and ambitious. He added two more sachets of tomato seeds containing 1000 seeds each, which he planted on another quarter-acre land in November 2024. His efforts paid off when he harvested tomatoes, which he sold at UGX 1,320,000 (USD 361). ‘‘I thank TechnoServe for bringing STRYDE training that helped me to be self-aware, I also thank TechnoServe for the support they gave me including provision of 60 vines and 1000 tomato seeds,’’ he said. Excited by his success, Brian plans to reinvest his earnings into expanding his tomato farming. He envisions this venture as a sustainable source of income that would support his vanilla garden and ensure a better future for his family.

Economic Empowerment and Future Aspirations

Today, Brian provides better for his wife, and child, and even supports his siblings. He plans on purchasing land worth 4 million Ugandan Shillings in regions like Nakirubi which he sees as a critical step toward achieving his dreams of becoming the lead vanilla farmer in Nakirubi, prominent tomato wholesaler and to buy a tricycle motorcycle (Tukutuku) that will help him to transport his products to the market.

Brian’s success story exemplifies resilience, commitment, and hard work. Through his journey, Brain demonstrates that with the right resources and support, young farmers can overcome significant challenges, transforming their lives and contributing positively to their communities. Brian is not just growing crops; he is cultivating hope and paving the way for a brighter future.

In the heart of Nakirubi village, Kayunga District, a young farmer named Muliliba Brian faced tremendous challenges.
