Her goal was simple: to earn enough money to support her family\u2019s needs\u2014food, clothes, medication, and school fees. At that time, she was living with her husband and their three children, doing her best to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Turning Point: Discovery of New Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her life changed when TechnoServe began mobilizing youth within the Vanilla farming communities of Bunyangabu, targeting those aged 18 to 29 for a series of empowering trainings from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technoserve.org\/our-work\/projects\/stryde\/\">Strengthening Rural Youth Development Through Enterprise<\/a>\u00a0(STRYDE) curriculum. STRYDE was a curriculum under the VINES project, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs.org\/\">Catholic Relief Services<\/a> and supported by a consortium that includes TechnoServe.\u00a0 VINES was a United States Department of Agriculture-funded Food for Progress project working to transform the vanilla sector in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Biira benefited from training on personal effectiveness, agribusiness, personal finance, and entrepreneurship. Guided by her husband\u2019s encouragement, Biira decided to participate, eager to learn new skills that could transform her future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning to Save and Think Bigger<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the training progressed, Biira realized the importance of saving money. Inspired, she committed to saving 10,000 shillings (USD 2.7) each week. After just three months, she had saved 150,000 shillings (USD 41)\u2014an amount she used to venture into buying and selling coffee. Her bold move paid off; by the end of the coffee season, she earned 500,000 Shillings (USD 136), which she poured back into her business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Vision for the Future &#8211; Expanding the Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With her newfound profit, Biira expanded her shop, adding soft drinks and a variety of food items like tomatoes, onions, fish, and cooking oil. Her business flourished, and she now saves around 20,000 shillings (USD 5) weekly. The income supports her family\u2019s essential needs\u2014food, clothing, hospital bills, and school fees.
