With six amazing children, the youngest and eldest aged 11 and 27 respectively, Juliet has been cultivating the land for 20 years, primarily focusing on cabbage, carrots, and onions for income. She also grows bananas, beans, and cowpeas for family sustenance. Her journey is a thrilling tale of perseverance, innovation, and empowerment through new agricultural technologies!

The Initial Struggles

Farming on two acres of land, Juliet cultivated 0.5 acres each of carrots and cabbages, and 0.25 acres of onions, but faced uphill battles. Despite her hard work, she harvested only 1,600 heads of cabbage for an income of UGX 800,000 (USD 219), 2,000 kg of carrots for UGX 1,000,000 (USD 273), and just 600 kg of onions for UGX 420,000. Juliet desperately wanted to break free from the cycle of relying on middlemen who offered unfair prices and limited her income potential.

Challenges like poor-quality inputs, pests, and diseases loomed large. Juliet often spent gruelling 10-hour days in the field, struggling to make ends meet, all while dreaming of a life where her children could attend university, and she could manage a cow for farming and milk production.

A New Hope!

Everything changed in 2022 when Juliet honored an invitation from the sub-county agriculture officer to attend a sensitization meeting for farmers about HortiMAP. While there, she was inspired by the services HortiMAP was to undertake including capacity building trainings in agronomy and business skills. She learnt of opportunities to improve her finances, markets and access to good quality agro inputs. This encouraged her to join the project to enable her benefit from what she considered an answer to the her challenges on the farm. This decision propelled her into a world of opportunity! For example, through participation in the project’s capacity-building trainings and networking with other players such as the Wanale Highland Farmers Association, she gained invaluable insights into good agricultural practices, effective pesticide use, and the importance of high-quality agro inputs.

With newfound knowledge, Juliet embraced modern farming techniques and transformed her operations. She switched to better Cabbage and onion varieties. She also began growing carrots on 0.5 acres. The results were astounding!

From Struggling to Flourishing!

Juliet harvested 2,400 heads of cabbage, generating UGX 2,400,000 (USD 657)! Her carrot yield skyrocketed to 4,500 kg, earning UGX 3,150,000 (USD 863) from local markets. Her onion production also flourished, yielding 1,000 kg and earning her UGX 1,500,000 (USD 410)! Juliet’s fruit-filled season earned her UGX 7,050,000 (USD 1931), a life-changing sum compared to her past earnings of UGX 2,220,000 (USD 608)!

Growth Beyond Farming!

In this new era of prosperity, Juliet is making educational dreams come true for her children, many of whom now attend boarding schools, with one having graduated as a nurse! Additionally, she has started constructing rental apartments in Mbale town for extra income.

Her cow provides 8 litres of milk daily (3 for her family and 5 for sale), generating UGX 35,000 (USD 9.5) weekly. Juliet uses the cow dung as manure to enrich her gardens, boosting her crop yields even further.

With her increased income, Juliet can now spend only 4 to 6 hours in the garden (completely transforming her earlier exhausting days). She employs 4 to 6 workers, creating jobs within her community, allowing precious time for family and self-care.

Future Dreams: A Model for Others!

With plans to complete her rental apartments by December 2025 and aspirations to establish an agro-input shop within the next three years, Juliet is on a mission! She envisions helping her children through university and aims to inspire and empower other farmers in her area by sharing her newfound knowledge and success.

“I feel empowered! I can now confidently care for my family’s needs, speak in public, and provide valuable technical assistance to fellow farmers,” Juliet beams. “Awareness is crucial. An empowered farmer can overcome challenges and lead a better life. I urge my fellow farmers to embrace training opportunities, nurture relationships with service providers, and shift focus to high-value crops to thrive!”

Juliet’s incredible transformation from struggling to flourishing is a beacon of hope. It shows that with the right support, new technologies, and a commitment to learning, dreams can become a reality!

Meet Juliet Nandutu, a vibrant 44-year-old horticulture farmer from Wahora Village in Bunatsoma Parish, Wanale Sub County, Mbale District, Eastern Uganda.
