Moses has always nurtured the dream of providing a better life for his family. Despite his initial struggles, the power of learning and the adoption of new technologies have empowered him to transform his household’s livelihood through horticulture farming. As a member of the Amina Horticulture Farmers Group, which benefited from the HortiMAP initiative, Moses has embarked on a journey toward agricultural innovation.

The Struggles of Subsistence Farming

For ten years, Moses relied on his 2 acres of land to cultivate staple crops like maize, groundnuts, cassava, and sesame. However, the income generated from these traditional crops was insufficient to meet his family’s needs. The production cycle of cassava stretched beyond a year, maize depended heavily on unpredictable rainfall, and groundnuts were subject to volatile market prices, often leaving Moses at the mercy of middlemen who offered low payments. His earnings fluctuated between UGX 400,000 (USD 109) and UGX 500,000 (USD 136) per season, and despite his efforts to save for school fees and investments, the financial strain left little room for growth.

Breaking Barriers

Moses faced multiple obstacles over the years. Attempts to venture into horticulture were stifled by poor-quality seeds, limited market access, insufficient financing, and little knowledge of good agricultural practices. One day, a fellow pastor invited him to a HortiMAP training session focused on horticulture farming. The session emphasized the profitability of high-yield, value chain crops such as onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and watermelons. Inspired by the potential for quicker returns and better market opportunities, Moses decided to take action.

Embracing Modern Techniques

Moses eagerly joined the HortiMAP programs and began transitioning to horticulture production. In the 2024 season, he utilized 0.5 acres for onions and 1 acre for watermelons. With the technical support of HortiMAP agronomists, Moses learned effective farming techniques, such as proper land preparation, pest control, and post-harvest handling. He sourced quality seeds and fertilizer, enhancing his production capabilities. The results were beyond his expectations! Moses harvested 3,500 kg of onions, earning UGX 7,000,000 (USD 1,917) in a season. While his watermelon yield suffered due to drought conditions, he still earned UGX 900,000 (USD 246), showcasing the success of the initial horticultural endeavours.

Diversifying for Success

Lifted by these results, Moses expanded his crop portfolio, cultivating green peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants on two acres of land. Under the continued guidance of TechnoServe agronomists, he experienced thriving production across these crops, attracting buyers from as far as Busia and Malaba. This diversification reduced risks associated with price fluctuations and provided a steady income stream throughout the year.

A Transformative Year: From Survival to Sustainable Profitability

In just one year, Moses tripled his farming income, shifting from earnings of UGX 400,000 – 500,000 (USD 109 – 136) from subsistence crops to over UGX 7,000,000 (USD 1917) through horticulture. With this newfound wealth, he invested in bulls for ploughing, reducing reliance on external labour, and purchased a heifer for milk production to meet household needs and generate income. Additionally, he acquired a knapsack sprayer to cut down on hiring costs, and he plans to acquire an irrigation system to combat climate-related challenges.

“I feel happy that I can pay school fees for my children to attend good schools. I spend less time on the farm now that I can employ about six workers, creating jobs in my community. Access to the right information and training was a turning point in my farming journey. I am now a model farmer that others learn from.” Moses speaks with gratitude.

Plans for the Future: Expanding Horizons

Looking ahead, Moses aims to purchase more land to expand his farming operations. With ongoing crops of tomatoes (at flowering stage), eggplants, and cabbages under cultivation, he has set aside funds to drill a shallow well and acquire an irrigation system by June 2025 and ensure consistent production to take advantage of the market demand for the produce.

Furthermore, Moses is excited about diversifying into poultry farming by rearing turkeys and local chickens, which will enhance household income. Determined to improve his living conditions, he also plans to construct a permanent house within two years.

Moses embodies the philosophy that farming is about working smart and a willingness to learn. He appreciates the support he has received from the TechnoServe team through HortiMAP, emphasizing that by extending services and sharing knowledge with fellow farmers, they can foster a community of resilience and growth.

As Moses looks toward a prosperous future, he encourages other farmers to embrace innovative technologies and maintain relationships with support service providers. His story is a testament to the transformative power of horticulture farming, paving the way for improved livelihoods and sustainable agricultural practices.

A Dedicated Farmer’s Journey Moses, a 52-year-old farmer and Pastor from Ogiroi B Village in Kochoge Parish, Tororo District, is married to Wakuri Agnes aged 42 with nine children, including two young sons.
