With two adorable children, ages 7 and 4, and a determined 17-year-old relative living with her, Racheal represents resilience and ambition. As a proud member of the \u201cTwenge Goat Rearing Farmer Group,\u201d she has been empowered by HortiMAP to boost her family’s income through onion and cabbage production, alongside growing maize, beans, and bananas for sustenance. Financial Support and Adoption of New Technologies have empowered Racheal to enhance her yield, income, and her family’s overall well-being!<\/p>\n
The Initial Struggles of a Dedicated Farmer<\/strong><\/p>\n Early in her farming journey, Racheal focused on growing cabbages and onions, harvesting 2000 kg of onions from half an acre and an impressive 2,800 heads of cabbage. However, despite her hard work, earning UGX 1,000,000 (USD 273) from onions and UGX 700,000 (USD 191) from cabbages barely met her family\u2019s essential needs and left her struggling to reinvest and repay loans from her savings group.<\/p>\n Confronting Challenges Head-On<\/strong><\/p>\n Racheal faced numerous challenges that kept her up at night. Poor roads and limited transportation options made accessing markets a daunting task. Even after borrowing from her savings group, her finances were stretched thin. A lack of knowledge in pest management and poor-quality inputs often bought from unreliable vendors led to disappointing yields. This made it difficult to afford balanced meals and proper schooling for her children. Racheal spent gruelling days working on others\u2019 farms for just UGX 5,000 (USD 1.3) daily, straining her physically and mentally.<\/p>\n A Ray of Hope: Joining HortiMAP<\/strong><\/p>\n Everything changed in 2023 when Racheal joined the HortiMAP project through her farmer group! This opportunity ignited newfound hope within her. With dreams of building a permanent home and starting a boutique, Racheal eagerly soaked up knowledge and skills from HortiMAP\u2019s agronomy trainings. Armed with best practices, she turned to certified seed varieties from trusted suppliers.<\/p>\n A Bountiful Harvest Fuels Ambition<\/strong><\/p>\n With a loan of 1,000,000 (USD 273) from Sebei SACCO, Racheal bought good quality inputs – seeds, pesticides, fertilizer and employed 6 casual workers in the garden. Racheal transformed her farming potential! She planted onions on one acre and cabbages on 0.5 acres, achieving an astounding harvest of 80 bags of onions (8,000 kg) and 5,000 heads of cabbages! Selling them at UGX 1,000 per kg for onions and UGX 700 for cabbages, Racheal earned a remarkable UGX 8,000,000 from onions and UGX 3,500,000 from cabbages! This financial breakthrough reignited her drive to strive for a better life!<\/p>\n A Vision for a Bright Future<\/strong><\/p>\n Racheal successfully repaid her loan and bought a cow and three goats for milk, income, and manure! Now, she confidently pays for her children\u2019s schooling at reputable schools, ensures her family\u2019s needs are met, and has invested in expanding her farming by hiring 2 acres for more onion production! Her sights are set on earning UGX 20,000,000 this season, with plans to begin constructing her dream house by December 2025 and opening a boutique for added income.<\/p>\n Empowered and Ready to Inspire Others<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI am grateful for the HortiMAP Project\u2019s life-changing support!\u201d Racheal exclaims. \u201cMy standard of living has drastically improved, and I can now afford my children\u2019s school fees without stress, enabling precious family time.
