Meet Chelimo Lorna!<\/strong><\/p>\n

At just 36 years old, Chelimo Lorna is a beacon of hope and inspiration in Kapkwirwok Ward, Sipi Town Council, in the beautiful Kapchorwa District of Eastern Uganda! With her husband by her side, Lorna has been passionately farming for 13 years and has transformed her family’s life through horticulture. They are proud parents of three vibrant children aged 12, 9, and 5.<\/p>\n

A New Chapter in Farming<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lorna\u2019s agricultural journey kicked off in 2012, starting with like maize and beans on one acre of land. Imagine producing 2,000kg of maize and 200kg of beans each season! While selling her maize for UGX 800 (USD 0.2) per kg and beans for UGX 1,500 (USD 0.4), Lorna earned around UGX 1,900,000 (USD 520) annually. However, despite her hard work, the income was barely enough to meet her family’s needs for food, education, and other essential costs.<\/p>\n

Overcoming Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before embracing horticulture, Lorna faced challenges that kept her up at night! Limited knowledge on pest management and crop nutrition, and a lack of access to better markets and financial resources, weighed heavily on her. She dreamt of building a permanent house and giving her children a quality education, but the income from her maize and beans gardens wasn’t enough. With borrowed money from her savings group, she tried to make ends meet, but the struggle was real!<\/p>\n

Turning Point: Embracing Horticulture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Realizing the incredible potential of horticulture, she was inspired by fellow farmers who transformed their lives and decided to take the plunge herself! She joined HortiMAP in 2022. With newfound access to essential extension services, through HortiMAP, Lorna learned about enterprise selection and business skills. In 2023, she started growing onions and tomatoes on 0.5 acres each, and the results were mind-blowing!<\/p>\n

Harvesting Success<\/strong><\/p>\n

With proper seed selection and modern farming techniques, Lorna\u2019s first harvest yielded 53 basins of tomatoes and a staggering 1,200kg of onions! She earned a fantastic UGX 2,650,000 (USD 712) from the tomatoes and UGX 2,160,000 (USD 575) from the onions! And guess what? This success just kept coming season after season! Now, she grows onions and tomatoes three times a year and cultivates maize and beans on a smaller scale.<\/p>\n

Financial Freedom and Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Vision for the Future<\/p>\n

Having started to build on her dreams, she’s now focusing on accomplishing them \u2013 completing construction of her permanent house, educating her children in better schools, and providing for her family\u2019s basic needs.<\/p>\n

\nHer ambition is growing more! Lorna dreams of establishing an agro-input shop in Sipi Center within the next year, helping her community access quality farming supplies while amplifying their success!<\/p>\n
