Operating as a horticulture vendor at Nabitalo Market in Namulonge zone, Wakiso district. Sifa began with modest resources and a strong desire to improve her household’s well-being. Her initial capital was UGX 150,000—saved from casual labor and borrowed from her father. Lacking business skills, record-keeping practices, and food safety knowledge, she struggled with finding a strategic location to establish her stall and how to efficiently manage her stall. Her breakthrough came when a friend advised her to approach Mr. Gonzaga, the chairperson of Nabitalo Market in order to obtain stall space in the market. With his support, she was given a small space to start her business, and from then onward, her determination set her on a path of growth.

Managing Her Business

Sifa’s mornings begin with prayer (swalah), followed by breakfast prepared by her teenage daughters. She then heads to her stall, where her day is marked by meticulous stock management—cleaning, reorganizing, and reordering supplies from trusted farmers. Her commitment shines through in her routine; as she begins reorganizing her market stall with dedication, she exemplifies a deep commitment to providing quality produce to her customers. Her resilience and hard work have turned her humble beginnings into a thriving enterprise.

Empowerment Through Support

Sifa acquired vital skills that propelled her business forward through TechnoServe’s HortiMAP project. Having been inspired to join the project to expand her sales through skills and knowledge imparted on her, through the project mentorship sessions, she expanded from a single small stall to two large ones, sourcing fresh produce from reliable suppliers in Gayaza main market and Luwero. This expansion increased her sales and revenue, enabling her to buy food for her mother every week and contribute to local development. “Empowering women and youth in markets, made us great people and important to our communities, which has enabled me to thrive and give back to my community, like saving them as a chairperson of Nabitalo market,” Sifa proudly shares.

Her networking extended beyond her stall, as she helped form the Ffena Magigye Development Group, fostering vendor cooperation and encouraging collective growth. These have helped support the vendors to actively and jointly make informed decisions regarding market activities like market hygiene and leadership. Through these collaborations, Sifa got even more contacts, ensuring a steady supply of fresh mangoes and pineapples—an essential boost for her business.

Transformation and Impact: Growth, Safety, and Community Leadership

With newfound skills and confidence, Sifa’s business experienced a remarkable transformation. She increased sales from UGX 220,000 (USD 60) to UGX 1,100,000 (USD 300) better vendor cooperation, and improved food safety practices that boosted customer trust. Her record-keeping became more organized, reducing waste and unnecessary expenses. Inspired by her progress, she now encourages fellow vendors to join similar programs.

Her future plans are ambitious: she dreams of starting a value-added business, processing juices, and training her children to join the enterprise. Her goal is to become the biggest supplier of processed juice in her community, exemplifying how strategic growth can change lives.

A Beacon of Empowerment and Hope

Sifa’s inspiring journey exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance, education, and community support. Her success serves as a model for other women in vendor markets. By increasing sales, expanding stalls, and adopting better food safety and record-keeping practices, she has shown that even small businesses can lead to significant community change. Her story offers hope that empowered women like Sifa can shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

At 37 years old, Nayiga Sifa is a single mother of five whose resilience has transformed her life and business.
